President’s Message: Making a Difference

Caval Olsen-Lepage BPW Saskatoon President

Advocacy is one of BPW Saskatoon’s Pillars. Our advocacy work is carried out at all levels of the organization and focuses on equal opportunities for all women, opposing violence in any form against girls and women and we work to educate and empower women in Canada. Below are some of the ways BPW Saskatoon is making a difference in Saskatoon.

We hosted our annual Accessory to a Change Fundraiser, which had another successful year! This sparkly soiree, sponsored by Hillberg and Berk, raises money for our bursary foundation. These bursaries help mature and aboriginal women attend post-secondary education. Our Bursary selection committee had the incredibly hard task of selecting three deserving women who would receive these bursaries this year and we thank them for their commitment to this incredible cause.

As President of BPW Saskatoon and National Chairperson for Ending Violence Against Women, I was invited to attend a panel hosted by the YWCA of Saskatoon to discuss violence against women and how we can work with Government to help put an end to this here in Saskatoon and across our nation. On this panel was women representing the YWCA, Adelle House, Interval House, YWCA Outreach and Turning Points Programs and MP’s Kelly Block, Cathy Sproule and Rachael Harder (who came all the way from Lethbridge).  This was an amazing experience to be a part of and MP Harder reached out to me personally to hear more about BPW’s resolutions and how she can help with Senator Lillian Dyck’s Bill S-215.  I honestly left feeling like we are in motion to make a difference.

I have also been invited to participate in a roundtable discussion around Equal Pay on Friday, April 28. This is being organized by 10 Actions 100 Days Group who also organized the Women’s March on Washington here in Saskatoon. I am thrilled to be a part of this discussion with a collection of Women’s Groups in Saskatoon and can’t wait to tell you all about it.

All of this is why I love BPW Saskatoon!! We are so much more than a networking group. We are an incredible group of women who are making a difference in the lives of women in our community. I couldn’t be more proud of all that we do.
